Tidy Related Posts vs YARPP: Performance and SEO Compared

· 6 min read

Related posts plugins keep visitors on your site longer by surfacing relevant content. YARPP (Yet Another Related Posts Plugin) has been the go-to choice for years, using full-text matching to find related content. Tidy Related Posts takes a different approach: taxonomy-based matching with caching, auto-linking, and a built-in link audit.

The choice between these two plugins comes down to a fundamental trade-off: YARPP's full-text analysis produces slightly more nuanced matches but at a significant performance cost. Tidy Related Posts uses WordPress's existing taxonomy data (categories and tags) to find related content efficiently, then adds SEO features that YARPP does not offer at all.

Feature Comparison Table

Feature Tidy Related Posts YARPP
Matching algorithm Taxonomy-based (categories + tags) Full-text matching on titles and content
Query performance Standard taxonomy queries + transient cache Heavy full-text SQL queries on every load
Auto-linking Automatic contextual links within post content (Pro) Not available
Link audit Dashboard showing orphan pages and missing links Not available
Gutenberg block Native block with layout options No block — widget or template tag only
Database impact Uses existing taxonomy tables Creates custom index, heavy queries on wp_posts
Caching Transient-based with auto-invalidation Optional caching (requires manual setup)
Display options Grid, list, and minimal layouts List or thumbnail layout
Custom post types Full support with per-type settings Supported but with performance caveats

Query Performance: Taxonomy vs. Full-Text

YARPP's core feature is full-text matching. It compares the title and body content of every post against every other post to calculate a relatedness score. This is done using MySQL MATCH ... AGAINST queries, which require a FULLTEXT index on the wp_posts table. YARPP creates this index automatically during activation.

The problem is that these queries are expensive. On a site with 500 posts, each page load triggers a full-text comparison against the entire posts table. On sites with 2,000+ posts, these queries can take hundreds of milliseconds — per page load. YARPP includes an optional caching layer, but it requires manual configuration and does not invalidate reliably when content changes.

Tidy Related Posts uses WordPress taxonomy data — categories and tags — to find related content. These queries use the existing taxonomy index tables (wp_term_relationships, wp_term_taxonomy) that WordPress already maintains and optimizes. A typical related posts query completes in under 5 milliseconds. Results are cached in transients and automatically invalidated when a post's categories or tags change.

The trade-off is that taxonomy-based matching requires your content to be properly categorized and tagged. If your posts have no tags and are all in a single "Uncategorized" category, the algorithm has nothing to work with. But if you follow basic WordPress content organization practices, taxonomy-based matching produces excellent results with a fraction of the database load.

Auto-Linking

Tidy Related Posts Pro includes an auto-linking feature that scans your post content and automatically inserts contextual links to related posts based on keyword matching. For example, if your post mentions "editorial calendar" and you have a post about editorial calendars, the plugin can automatically link that phrase to the relevant post.

This is a significant SEO feature. Internal linking is one of the most effective on-page SEO strategies, but manually maintaining internal links across hundreds of posts is impractical. Auto-linking handles it programmatically, with controls for maximum links per post, excluded pages, and keyword overrides.

YARPP has no equivalent feature. It displays related posts after the content but does not create links within the content itself.

Link Audit Dashboard

Tidy Related Posts includes a link audit dashboard that identifies orphan pages (posts with no internal links pointing to them) and suggests linking opportunities. This is directly actionable information: orphan pages receive less link equity and are harder for Google to discover through crawling.

YARPP does not include any audit or analytics functionality. It is purely a display plugin — it shows related posts and nothing more.

Gutenberg Block

Tidy Related Posts provides a native Gutenberg block that lets you place related posts anywhere in your content with a live preview. You can choose between grid, list, and minimal layouts, set the number of posts to display, and exclude specific posts — all from the block sidebar.

YARPP does not offer a Gutenberg block. You can display related posts using a widget, a template tag (yarpp_related()), or auto-display after post content. None of these methods provide in-editor previewing or the placement flexibility of a block.

Database Impact

YARPP adds a FULLTEXT index to the wp_posts table. On shared hosting, this index creation can time out during activation on large sites. The index also increases the storage footprint of your posts table and can slow down other queries that use the same table.

Tidy Related Posts does not modify any database tables or add any indexes. It uses WordPress's existing taxonomy infrastructure, which is already optimized for the exact type of queries it performs.

When YARPP Might Still Work

If your content is not well-organized with categories and tags — for example, a portfolio site with minimal taxonomy structure — YARPP's full-text matching can find relationships that taxonomy-based matching cannot. If your site has fewer than 200 posts and performance is not a concern, YARPP's query overhead may be negligible.

Our Recommendation

For most WordPress sites, Tidy Related Posts is the better choice. The taxonomy-based algorithm delivers fast, relevant results without the database overhead of full-text matching. The auto-linking feature and link audit dashboard add SEO value that YARPP simply does not offer. And the native Gutenberg block provides a modern editing experience with visual previews.

YARPP pioneered related posts for WordPress. Tidy Related Posts builds on that foundation with modern architecture, better performance, and SEO features that go beyond just displaying a list of related links.
